Of all the hotels in Tangiers, El Minzah is without a doubt the most sumptuous and elegant. El Minzah is one of the few five star establishments in the city and it was built at the command of John Crichton-Stuart. He was the fourth Marquis of Bute, a British aristocrat with extensive interests in the 'International Zone'. The hotel was constructed in a pure Hispano-Moorish style and it is true to the architectural heritage of Morocco whilst embodying all the comfort of an English gentleman's club.

Situated on the Straits of Gibraltar, where Europe and Africa almost touch, the El Minzah was the fashionable heart of 'International Tangiers'. It was then that the hotel first acquired its deserved reputation as one of the most luxurious in North Africa. The passage of time has neither marred the charms of the El Minzah nor witnessed any diminution in its unrivalled position as the leading hotel in northern Morocco.

During the Second World War the hotel's « Caid's Piano Bar », much favoured by citizens of the Allied Powers, for whom it served as an informal « club », was a centre for espionage. It served as the prime inspiration for Sam's « Cafe Americain » in the famous Humphery Bogart film « Casablanca ».
