You probably would not play this rather short flat parkland course unless you were aware of its history and place in French golf. Created in 1888 Biarritz, Le Phare is the second oldest in France*and was built for the British who played golf and cricket here.

Designed by the Dunn brothers, reworked by Harry Colt, it lost its seaside holes in 1945. Just over 5,400 meters long the course includes six excellent par 3ís.

It is located within the city of Biarritz, has been enjoyed by royalty, King George V11 played golf and cricket here, celebrities enjoying the resort of Biarritz, and many famous professional players and is still the fashionable club in the area where the large local membership creates a special buzz around the clubhouse and its excellent restaurant.

It is still recommended by those used to playing longer modern courses as a classic, it always kept in immaculate condition with fast tricky greens and still very much a challenge.

* the oldest course to be opened in France, and continental Europe, was at Pau, 125 kilometres south east of Biarritz.
