Golf has been played over this land for some 500 years. Originally a thirteen hole course, a private club was instituted in 1869 and the course extended to 18 holes. Over the years these fell into decline but are now part of the 36 hole Archerfield Estate courses recently re-designed by David J. Russell.

The Fidra Links are a combination of pine forest and fast running links. With generous greens, understated bunkers, the course winds its way out to the beach at Yellowcraig where commanding views of the Firth of Forth and the coast of Fife lie beyond.

Compared with the Fidra the Direlton course is more of a traditional Scottish links with sweeping fairways, deep menacing bunkers and undulating sand dunes bordering each fairway. The course runs by Archerfield House and offers picturesque views of Dirleton Castle.
