The southernmost of the famous and historic links set out along this coast, the Ailsa at Turnberry together with its neighbour Royal Troon are in the very top echelons of British Golf. Remembered by many for the duel between Jack Nicklaus and Tom Watson over the four days of the 1977 Open, The Ailsa course enjoys staggering views across the Forth of Clyde to the granite dome of Ailsa Craig, at the tip of Argyll and the peaks of Arran.

In a wind you will need all your skills to return any resemblance of a decent score, however you will have had a day to remember, moments such as standing on the ninth tee, set on a rocky premonitory on the edge of the sea, with a drive to make across the corner of the bay with a glimpse of the site of Robert Bruce's Castle for good measure.

The clubhouse is a splendid place to rest after the round with excellent food and views of the course and ocean below.
