Even before you reach the clubhouse and have an opportunity to view the numerous photographs of visiting personalities that adorn the walls, an early indication that you are about to enter celebrity golf territory. There is a statue of President Bill Clinton, golf club in hand, as you enter this charming seaside town.

You need only take a few steps outside the modern clubhouse to know how special a place this is; The sea, the mouth of the Shannon ahead, the Old course to the right and Killen to the left.

Having left the ancient graveyard behind at the first on the Old course, there is a while to settle down before beginning the relentless challenge of the remainder of the course set out through magnificent dunes and chasms.

Robert Trent Jones Sr. had second pick, albeit in the same undulating dunes, to layout the Cashen course, but managed to create one with a character very much of its own; a links style course with nuances of more modern design.
