Cork and Blarney Castle

Region: County Cork
Monuments: The City - Cork City Jail - Blarney Castle

The City
Located on an island between two arms of the River Lee, Cork city, chosen as European City of Culture for 2005, is a delightful place to explore by foot. Wander along the river front and down the narrow streets, many of which were canals in days gone by. Visit the English Market where fruits, vegetables, meat and fish have been sold since 1610 and Paul Street with its trendy shops and restaurants.

Cork City Jail
Well worth a visit is the restored Cork City Jail where an excellent audiovisual show recounts its history and models of inmates and their guards are a chilling reminder of the austerity of life during the 19th and 20th centuries.

Blarney Castle
You will need a head for heights to kiss the famous Blarney Stone magical eloquence is supposedly conferred if you do, though to reach it you will be required to hang backwards over the ramparts on the top of Blarney Castle - quite an ordeal albeit you are held by the legs by a local helper. Blarney village and the castle is a delight to visit and excellent shopping for all things Irish at the Blarney Mills outlet store should not be missed.
