Fota Island and Cobh

Region: County Cork
Monuments: Cobh - Fota House and Arboretum - Fota Wildlife Park

A half million Irish emigrated to the new world during and following the famine years of 1844-8, it was Titanicís last port of call and the cruise liner Lusitania was torpedoed a few miles south by a German submarine during World War 2. These and other events, including the deportation of 40,000 convicts to Australia from here are recounted at the Queenstown Story, an audio visual exhibition set up in the old Victorian railway station on the quayside.

We will visit Cobh on the way from Cork and Fota Island, with its Foto Wildlife Park and arboretum surrounding Foto House, all of which are worth seeing albeit a trifle incongruous to see giraffes and zebras wandering in Irish parkland.
