Aix en Provence

Region: Provence - Bouches du Rhone
Monuments: The old quarter - The Markets - Museums, tapestry and furniture; Cezanne'e Studio

Often described as the Florence of Provence, Aix-en-Provence, a medieval fortified town, was enjoyed by the Romans in their time, was capital of Provence in the 15th century, has since inspired writers and artists alike - you can visit Cézanne’s studio while you are there. It is now an international University City of Culture.

Surrounded by boulevards and squares, the center of Aix, the “vieux ville”, is easily explored on foot. Take a coffee in a café in the Place de Hotel de Ville where the flower market is held, more than likely to the accompaniment of street musicians; take lunch at Le Grillon or Les Deux Garçons on famous tree lined Cours Mirabeau with its sidewalk cafes, bookshops and mansions. Wander the shops and boutiques; there is even a smart Casino for those inclined. You can while away a day most happily here.
