Lacock and Bowood House

Region: Wiltshire and Somerset
Monuments: Lacock Abbey - Lacock village - Bowood House & Gardens

Designed by Robert Adam in the 18th Century, Bowood House is the magnificent family home of the Marquis and Marchioness of Lansdowne. On display in the exhibition rooms upstairs is a remarkable collection of family heirlooms built up over 250 years. These include Victoriana, Indiana, silver, porcelain, fine paintings and watercolours. Interesting rooms include Robert Adam’s famous Library, Dr Joseph Priestley’s Laboratory where he discovered oxygen gas, and the Chapel.

This Wiltshire stately home stands in one of Capability Brown’s most beautiful parks with gently sloping lawns stretching away from the House to the lake beyond. There is also a separate garden of 50 acres of spectacular rhododendron walks open mid April to early June. The picturesque village of Lacock has been used by many film makers as the set for period films. Its conservation is under the watchful eye of the National Trust. Besides the 15th century church, the Abbey is well worth visiting. It is here that William Henry Fox Talbot, an early pioneer of photography took his first photograph in 1835. A museum in the grounds includes displays on his experiments.
