Monuments: Jeronimos Monastery - The Palace of Belem

Although the earthquake of 1755 destroyed much of the city, marvelous remnants of its days of glory, the Age of Discovery, still remain. The Belem district, alongside the River Tegus, is the site of monuments from the period as well as those built to celebrate it.

The Monument to the Discoveries erected in 1960 to mark the 500th anniversary of the death of Henry the Navigator stands nearby the Torre de Belem, a fortress built in the early 1500ís, a beacon for homecoming sailors. A short distance away, built during the same period, the magnificent Monastery of the Jerominos and its church, the Santa Maria de Belem and Cloisters. The building also houses the Naval Museum which is well worth a visit as is the Coach museum, housed in the nearby Palace of Belem.
