Faro

Region: The Algarve
Monuments:

A pre-historic fishing village, Faro, the capital of the Algarve since 1756, became an important port under the Romans. It was captured by the Moors, ransacked by the British and is today a pleasant respite from the neighboring beaches and resorts. The port, with its yachts and fish restaurants leads onto a charming shopping area. Take a stroll through the Arco da Villa up narrow streets to the oldest part of the city, Largo da Se, a square lined with orange trees which houses an 18th century seminary, which is still in use, although it is closed to the public. You can visit the Se opposite, the first Christian church in Faro, dating back to Medieval times.
