Region: Provence - Bouches du Rhone

Beside the amphitheatre and other Roman remains from 31 BC, Nimes, famous for creating "de nimes" or denim worn by the gardians of the Camargue, is also a city of the arts, visit The Carre d’Art a modern art complex designed by architect Norman Foster opened in 1993 and the Museum of Fine art. Located along the banks of the Rhone, Arles a Greek site before the Romans turned it into the capital of the three Gauls - France , Spain and Britain is probably Provences’ most distinctive towns with fine relics if its past. Les Arenes, the Roman theatre which could seat 21,000 people, the Cryptoporticus, huge subterranean galleries, the Church of St-Trophine to name just a few. The Carmarque, one of Europe’ largest wetlands, it covers some 346,0000 acres, is a haven for migrating and resident birds including exotic Greater Flamingoes. It is however probably best known for its native white horses whose cowboy riders, the gardians, herd the black bulls for the neighboring cities of Nimes and Arles, where fights are still held today in their respective Roman amphitheatres.
