Bowood House

Region: Wiltshire and Somerset

Designed by Robert Adam in the 18th Century, Bowood House is the magnificent family home of the Marquis and Marchioness of Lansdowne. On display in the exhibition rooms upstairs is a remarkable collection of family heirlooms built up over 250 years. These include Victoriana, Indiana, silver, porcelain, fine paintings and watercolours. Interesting rooms include Robert Adam’s famous Library, Dr Joseph Priestley’s Laboratory where he discovered oxygen gas, and the Chapel. This Wiltshire stately home stands in one of Capability Brown’s most beautiful parks with gently sloping lawns stretching away from the House to the lake beyond. There is also a separate garden of 50 acres of spectacular rhododendron walks open mid April to early June.
