From Kinsale to Kenmare and Cork

Region: County Cork
Monuments: Kinsale - Bantry Bay - Kenmare

Familiar to many golfers since Old Head golf course was built just south of here, Kinsale is one of the prettiest towns in southern Ireland. Protected by Charles Fort built by the British in 1670 to protect the town from foreign marauders, this delightful harbor town is now a popular yachting center, known by some as the gourmet capitol of Ireland as a result of its annual gourmet festival and it selection of good restaurants.

Bantry is an ideal place to break the journey from Kinsale to Kenmare which takes you through magnificent rugged coastal and inland scenery. Besides an excellent fish restaurant, Bantry House, the home of the White family,(no relation!), the former Earls of Bantry is well worth a visit. Currently under renovation, the main house, built in 1739, enjoys splendid views across the Bantry Bay, has an interesting selection of furniture and art. In the stable block there is an exhibition covering the attempt by a French Armada to invade here in 1796.

The onward journey to Kenmare should be made in daylight. Magnificent views to the Beara Peninsular are followed by an amazing drive though the Caha Mountains. Kenmare town is a delight. Fashionable, it has two world class hotels and a selection of excellent restaurants.
