Clovelly and Hartland Abbey

Region: Devon
Monuments: Clovelly village - Hartland Abbey

A visit to the picturesque fishing village of Clovelly is not for the faint hearted. Steep steps and paths take you down a steep slope to the privately owned village with its beach and harbor below.

Written about in the book Westward Ho!, which tells the story of the Spanish Armada, the village and gardens are kept in immaculate order. Enjoy a lobster lunch at the small hotel alongside the harbor but make sure you find the Land rover afterwards which, for “a couple of pounds” will save you the long haul back up the cliff. Rides to the island of Lundy can be prearranged on fishing boats based in the harbor.

Nearby Hartland Abbey is well worth a visit. The Abbey was the last to be dissolved by Henry VIII in 1539, who made a gift of it to the Sergeant of his wine cellar - William Abbott. The house has been passed on to the present day owners through a series of marriages and, therefore, has never been sold and remains a lived in, family home.
