The Algarve Portugal The southern coast of Portugal, The Algarve, has the highest concentration of well maintained, championship level, resort golf courses in Europe. For years the Algarve’s San Lorenzo, set out amongst wetlands adjoining the banks of the Rio Formosa, was rated No I in Portugal. In recent times others have arrived on the coast which some think are equally good and probably better. Quinto da Ria which opened in 2002, designed by local Rocky Roquemore, located near the Spanish boarder and the Victoria course at Villamoura, designed by Arnold Palmer, which opened in 2005 and hosted an American Express World Championship that year, have both settled down into formidable challenges. Besides these newer courses, the two Quinto do Lago courses and the nearby Val do Lobo Ocean and Royal with its famous par 3, over the three cliffs, are still maintained in excellent order. Add to these the other Villamoura courses, the Old and the Millennium and you have more than enough excellent golf to satisfy even the most avid golfer. And besides golf, enjoy first class resort hotels or villas if you prefer and excellent restaurants, seafood in the local marisqueiras are complimented with a good selection of French, Italian and other restaurants. For some local flavour away from the golf developments, visit Faro, the capital of the Algarve and inland, the villages of Loule and Estoi. The Moors, Romans et all, lived here at one time and left behind sufficient evidence of their occupation to satisfy the traveller who wants more than golf. |
